Scott Gast, an Adler University student and CME intern, shares his thoughts with us relating to the Mentoring Effect. As a current graduate student and intern he has a lot of knowledge to share on starting your college journey as well as CME's mission and impact. What is your favorite aspect of being an SJP intern at CME?
The CME staff could not be more welcoming, professional, and dedicated to their mission. Darion and the rest of the team is really about serving our city and its young people, and their hard work and innovation obviously comes from a place of love. And they have fun while doing it! It's inspiring.
What challenges have you helped your CME overcome?
I'm trying to help CME raise the funds it needs to pursue its mission -- and to keep pursuing its mission over the long term.
What advice would you give to others starting their college journey?
College is a vehicle that can take you to places you never thought you'd go. I mean that in the deepest sense: my own college experience took me out of my comfort zone and introduced me to people, ideas, and career paths I didn't even know existed. And it gave me the confidence that comes with knowing that I can learn whatever I need to learn to get wherever I want to go.
My advice to those starting that journey is to keep an open mind, try new things, and pay attention to what interests and excites you. Ask questions. Stay curious. And have faith in the value of the abilities, skills, and life experiences that you already have -- college can help them grow in directions that may surprise you.
